Reflection: The Hobbit or There and Back Again by JRR Tolkien

This book is a classic for a reason. It was a great escape from the chaos of the world and felt like a good break after Corruption in America. Although it could be argued that some of the themes in this book are applicable to modern day, like the war resulting from the wild lust for gold and treasure, I don’t believe it was intended to be allegorical. Nevertheless, lessons of persistence and defying the odds come through.

Tolkien has an engaging writing style, with very personable language like alluding to a future event instead of foreshadowing and then saying “but we will get to that later.” While it may not have the intrigue or subtlety of foreshadowing, the unique quality of saying outright what will happen is endearing and quite fun.

While I initially couldn’t get engrossed because I generally prefer nonfiction, the writing style and characters brought me in soon enough and I am excited for the rest of the Lord of the Rings series.
